The Children's Place Reports Second Quarter Results
SECAUCUS, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 16, 2001--The Children's Place Retail Stores, Inc. (Nasdaq:PLCE) today reported results for the second quarter ended August 4, 2001.
Second Quarter

Net sales for the quarter increased 8% to $116.3 million, compared with $107.8 million for the same period in 2000.

Excluding sales of the Company's Yaak folding scooter, second quarter sales increased 10% over the prior year period.

Comparable store sales decreased 16% for the quarter, versus a 7% increase for the same period last year.

Excluding sales of the Company's Yaak folding scooter, second quarter comparable store sales decreased 14% from the prior year period.

Net loss was $3.9 million versus net income of $1.5 million last year.

Diluted loss per share was $0.14 compared with earnings per share of $0.06 in the 2000 period.

The Company opened 44 new stores during the second quarter.
Six-Month Period

Net sales for the six-month period increased 16% to $276.8 million from $237.9 million for the same period in 2000.

Comparable store sales decreased 8% for the period compared with a 6% increase for the same period last year.

Net earnings were $8.9 million compared with $10.9 million a year earlier.

Diluted earnings per share were $0.33 compared with $0.41 in the 2000 period.

The Company opened 81 new stores during the six-month period.
"Second quarter results were primarily impacted by a slowdown in store traffic, due to the difficult economic climate. However, we are well positioned with fresh and fashionable product for the important back-to-school season. We have increased the proportion of fashion to basic merchandise with a favorable customer response," commented Ezra Dabah, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.
"Our aggressive and profitable growth strategy continues on-track with 87 new stores opened year-to-date, well on the way to opening our planned 120 stores this year. Sales in our new stores continue to perform exceptionally well, exceeding our expectations. The superior economics of these stores, coupled with the broad consumer appeal of our brand, are the key factors in our successful expansion strategy," concluded Mr. Dabah.
